How to add elevation to a GPX file

A Splitshape pacing plan is built on the course's elevation profile: it's what tells you where to ease off on the climbs and where to take time back on the descents. Some GPX files (race websites, route-drawing tools) don't include elevation. We usually fill it in automatically. If that doesn't work, you can add it yourself in a few seconds.

Step by step in gpx.studio

  1. Open gpx.studio in your browser. It's free and doesn't need an account.
  2. Load your file: in the "File" menu choose "Open...", or just drag the GPX file onto the map.
  3. In the toolbar, click the mountain icon ("Request elevation data"), then the button with the same name. If the button is greyed out, select your file in the file list first.
  4. Download the updated file: in the "File" menu choose "Export...", then "Download file".
  5. Come back to Splitshape and upload the new file in the plan form.

Button names are from the English version of gpx.studio. If yours shows another language, you can switch it in gpx.studio's settings.
